Demetrious Polychron, author of “The Fellowship of the King,” lost a lawsuit against Amazon and JRR Tolkien’s estate, claiming infringement on his Lord of the Rings fanfic. Polychron demanded $250 million but now owes $134,000 in legal fees to the Tolkien Estate. The court ruled that Polychron’s book infringed upon Amazon’s Rings of Power series. The judge described Polychron’s lawsuit as “frivolous and unreasonably filed.”

Black Site Studios released a new edition of the Horror miniatures game, Don’t Look Back, featuring updates, revamped mechanics, and new characters. The edition includes bonus rules for Vehicles and Companions, incorporating previous expansions. The set includes 32mm resin miniatures and a new Core Rulebook.

Amazon Studios secured global rights to Warhammer 40,000, with Henry Cavill set to star and executive produce multiple projects. The deal covers series, films, and more. Cavill, a high-profile Warhammer fan, expressed excitement, and Amazon plans to work with Games Workshop and Vertigo Entertainment. The announcement follows Cavill’s involvement in various upcoming projects. Games Workshop announced a £2,500 end-of-year bonus for all employees as part of its 2023 profit share scheme. This comes after the release of Warhammer 40,000’s 10th Edition ruleset and the Leviathan box set. Additionally, Warhammer: The Old World is set to receive a robust reboot in 2024.

Wizards of the Coast denied claims that generative AI was used in artwork teasing the 2024 core rulebooks. Responding to social media allegations, the company stated that no generative AI was used, consistent with their artist guidelines. The artist, Nestor Ossandón, defended the process, sharing early sketches and work-in-progress versions. Concerns over AI-created artwork in the industry were raised following recent layoffs at Hasbro.

Nightfall Games discovered that artwork for Terminator 2 and RESIST on Kickstarter had AI-generated elements, identified as resembling the ‘Midjourney’ AI art generator. The company expressed disappointment, stating AI art is theft, and vowed to fix the issue. They are working with external artists to ensure AI-free art and implementing checks before payment and acceptance. The team thanked backers for their support.

The upcoming Revised Player’s Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons is set to be released in 2024. The new handbook will be the largest ever, featuring more pages and 48 subclasses (four for each of the 12 classes), along with new spells, feats, and weapon rules. Notably, the backgrounds will now impact a character’s starting ability scores and provide a special feat at first level. The Revised edition is designed to be compatible with the current fifth edition material, allowing players to use it alongside existing products. There will also be an upcoming Revised editions of the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual in 2024, providing a campaign setting, adventures, and over 500 monsters, including new creatures and tweaked versions of familiar ones. Additionally, it highlights other D&D books expected in 2024, such as updated classic dungeon crawls, an anthology called “Quests from the Infinite Staircase,” and an all-new adventure called “Vecna: Eve of Ruin,” featuring the return of the iconic villain. These releases coincide with the 50th anniversary of D&D’s publication and the Year of the Dragon in 2024.

Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), has announced layoffs of 1,100 employees, in addition to the previously downsized 800, just before the holidays. This decision is part of Hasbro’s strategic transformation to modernize and streamline its organization, citing challenging market conditions in the toy industry. Talsorian Games has revealed the upcoming release of “Shadow Scar,” an anime-inspired RPG scheduled for 2024. Created by Cody Pondsmith, lead designer of The Witcher RPG and co-designer of Cyberpunk RED, the game revolves around the Shadow Scar Agency, a covert group of ninja defending multiple dimensions from interdimensional monsters. Drawing inspiration from anime series like Naruto and Demon Slayer, the game features a diverse range of dimensions, each influenced by Japanese folklore, pulp noir, steampunk, and alternate history. The unique character creation draws from six shinobi clans, resembling the monster-hunting schools in The Witcher. The game introduces a new d6-based system called Mosaic, designed for a quicker and lighter gaming experience compared to the Interlock system. Cultural consultants are being consulted for the Japanese setting to ensure an authentic portrayal. The release is anticipated in 2024, starting with a Starter Set and followed by a full launch line, including the core rulebook, miniatures, and accessories.

Free League Publishing has announced a new campaign book for Alien: The Roleplaying Game called “Building Better Worlds.” Set in the Alien universe, the campaign involves exploring a moon turned into a colony, facing calamities and mysteries. The $47 book is available for pre-order and is set to be released digitally and physically on January 16, 2024. The campaign includes new characters, gear, ships, and alien species, offering an expanded experience for players. The campaign book aims to provide tools for running a full open-world campaign within the Alien RPG universe, featuring exploration, colonization, and encounters with extraterrestrial creatures.

Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), is delaying the shipment of its physical release, The Deck of Many Things, due to defects in the product. The defects include issues with the shape of the cards, tight paper bands damaging the foil on the cards, and size discrepancies among the cards. The publisher intends to re-manufacture and re-distribute copies without these issues and is suspending the initial ship date.The specific defects in the cards and how they impact gameplay. Wizards of the Coast remains confident that pre-order customers may still receive their orders before the end of 2023, but inspection and replacement will take time. These issues are not related to a cost-saving strategy but could be due to using paper packaging instead of non-biodegradable plastic wrapping. The publisher’s effort to reduce plastic waste in packaging might have led to some of the problems.

The Army Painter has introduced a new line of paints called Warpaints Fanatic, which has been in development for four years. This line includes 216 new paints, featuring eight reformulated skin tones, reformulated metallics, 18 effects paints, and a wash line with 18 colors. The paints are designed to have excellent coverage, making them suitable for professional painters and tabletop gamers. They incorporated feedback from various painters to ensure the quality of the paints. The Fanatic paints also use significantly more pigment (300%-700% more) without sacrificing coverage, thanks to the addition of a stabilizer. The paints come in a flexible six-color triad system for versatility and are color-matched to The Army Painter’s existing line of sprays and air paints. The line includes mixing balls, and the paint bottles indicate their triad set and actual color on the side. The Fanatic paints will be available for pre-order in various sets starting in early 2024.

Forbidden Psalm: The End Times Edition is the ultimate version of the Forbidden Psalm tabletop miniatures game. It combines the Core Book and the In the Footsteps of the Mad Wizard expansion into a single comprehensive edition. The game is compatible with the MÖRK BORG TTRPG and is designed for 28mm miniatures. It allows players to use their existing miniatures or create custom ones with random tables provided. The game offers solo play and cooperative rules, with unique warband members generated by random generators. Players recruit a warband of five members to undertake missions for Vriprix the Mad Wizard, facing rivals, monsters, and dangerous relics in their quest. The game is known for its disposable warband members who can suffer injuries, flaws, and wield dark magic. The End Times Edition includes new content, art, and lore, offering 25 scenarios for players to explore. While the core rules remain the same, this edition provides a better design, rules clarification, and combines the Mad Wizard expansion into the Core Book. It comes in hardcover or softcover versions, with the hardcover edition exclusively available through this Kickstarter. Additionally, mini-expansions from Forbidden Psalm are collected into a new edition, featuring over 20 scenarios, horrors, new weapons, and more. This softcover book is expected to be 80-100 pages long.

Mantic Games, a well-known miniature wargame studio, is set to launch a Kickstarter campaign in 2024 for an “epic-scale” Warpath game. Initially conceived as a larger version of Firefight, Warpath aimed to support sprawling battles with numerous vehicles. However, the concept evolved to focus on smaller-scale battles, allowing players to field massive armies. The game’s development has involved considerations like starting factions, materials, and rules. Mantic Games engaged with fans to gauge interest and found substantial enthusiasm for the Warpath universe at a smaller scale. Tom Bloom, the creator of the webcomic “Kill Six Billion Demons” and the mech TTRPG “Lancer,” has developed a new wargame called Magnagothica: Maleghast. It features a gothic, punk, and heavy metal theme set in a city where death is broken, and the dead return. The game is designed for virtual tabletop play and includes tactical necromancer action. The game is designed for two to four players and uses a square grid for gameplay. Players control a group called a Black Mass, which includes a Necromancer and minions. There are six different factions in the game, each with its own unique style and soundtrack. Tom Bloom created the game, including the design, layout, writing, and artwork, in a short time frame, and he hopes players will enjoy it.

The possibility of removing the Druid and Shaman creature types from the game Magic: The Gathering (MTG) due to their association with real-world religions that practice druidism and shamanism has come up on a designer’s blog. The head designer of MTG, Mark Rosewater, hinted at the potential removal in response to a question about the exclusion of the “witch” creature type. Wizards of the Coast, the company behind MTG, has been actively removing content to avoid accusations of racism and intolerance. Dark Horse Comics and Massif Press are collaborating to release the LANCER Tabletop Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook. The second edition of Alkemy, a 28mm tabletop skirmish game with unique rules such as guessing the range for ranged attacks and models becoming less effective as they take damage, is currently crowdfunding. Free League has announced the upcoming release of a bestiary for their recently released fantasy RPG, Dragonbane. The book includes 63 creatures, nine of which are new playable kin with unique abilities, and is available for pre-order in standard and premium collector’s editions with immediate PDF access. The full-color hardcover book is illustrated by Johan Egerkrans and David Brasgalla. A complete cardboard standee set for the creatures in the bestiary will also be available separately. Additionally, Free League will release a hardback version of the Dragonbane rulebook with an added introductory adventure. Dragonbane is a fast-paced tabletop RPG designed for mirth and mayhem roleplaying, and players are invited to design and publish their own supplements using the third-party license for the game.

“Mutant Chronicles: Luna City Blues” is an upcoming tabletop RPG that revives the classic Mutant Chronicles IP. It takes place in a dystopian setting on the moon’s colony, Luna City, known for crime and corruption. The game focuses on detective-based adventures and mysteries. Designers Mikael Bergström and Gabrielle de Bourg, along with licenser Necromakina, are modernizing the rules and mechanics while still paying homage to the original game. The crowdfunding project will launch on Kickstarter in 2024.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police recovered around $300,000 worth of stolen Magic: The Gathering cards from Gen Con 2023. Two designers, Thomas J. Dunbar and Andrew Pearson Giaume, were identified as persons of interest in the theft. The stolen cards were taken from the convention center, and New York State Police assisted in their recovery. The Weekly LIVE 195 – NuTSR Bankrupt, Heroscapes Returns, Embracer Layoffs and Privateer Press Legacy Ends

It appears that NuTSR, a company owned by Justin LaNasa, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which involves the liquidation of the company’s assets. According to documents filed in North Carolina, NuTSR’s gross revenue for 2023 is $621.93, while its total liabilities amount to over $384,000. The company gained attention in 2020 when Justin LaNasa and Stephen Dinehart registered the defunct TSR trademarks and launched a new venture involving Ernie Gygax, son of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax. However, NuTSR faced various controversies, including an attempted lawsuit against D&D publishers Wizards of the Coast, and in March 2022, they were sued by Wizards of the Coast.

On a different note, the game Heroscape, a wargaming classic, is set to return despite a failed crowdfunding campaign in the past. Renegade Game Studios has taken up the reboot of the miniatures game after the project called “Age of Annihilation” did not reach its funding goal. Heroscape is known for its accessible hex-based terrain, Lego-like fantasy miniatures, and beginner-friendly rules.

Additionally, Embracer Group, a major gaming publisher that owns studios such as Gearbox (known for Borderlands), Crystal Dynamics (known for Tomb Raider), and the rights to The Lord of the Rings, has announced a restructuring program. This program aims to make the company leaner, stronger, more focused, and self-sufficient. As part of this restructuring, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations are expected.

In a separate announcement, Privateer Press, a company known for its WARMACHINE, HORDES, and Riot Quest models, has stated that it will halt manufacturing for its Legacy models. Tales of the Valiant by a Kobold Press is a  “remaster of D&D fifth edition” and has launched on Kickstarter, has gone by many names during development. It was first introduced to the world as ‘Project Black Flag’, as an RPG system that uses D&D 5e as its foundation, replicating and revising many of the features Wizards of the Coast made usable through a Creative Commons license. It’s its own game, but the system promises to be fully compatible with D&D books. While Kobold Press’ title was in development as early as summer last year, the world first heard about it during the height of the DnD OGL scandal, when proposed changes to Wizards’ third-party licenses threatened to change how companies like Kobold Press operated.

A controversy involving one of the biggest YouTube board games channels and a board games publisher has had fans worked up over the way communication was handled and the perceived meaning of the interaction. Into the Unknown, the board game developers behind Aeon Trespass: Odyssey have accused Quackalope, a YouTube channel known for board game reviews, of trying to force them into a sponsorship in exchange for avoiding a negative review for their game.

Warhammer the Old World is a game that is coming out… sometime. It’s a game that has a lot of people very excited. It’s also one that we know basically nothing about. A release date is too many the least of our questions, since we don’t have any real idea what the rules will be like. Well this week GW did give us some more info, and opened up a ton of new questions, about the factions. However the information wasn’t met with approval, but instead confused and befuddled a lot of potential players. Let’s take a look at why.

Pathfinder Nexus’ open beta brings the RPG that much closer to digital D&D parity. Free accounts can create and save up to seven discrete characters. A new suite of digital tools from tabletop platform Demiplane wants to make the lives of online-only Pathfinder players a little bit easier. Pathfinder Nexus just launched in open beta, allowing anyone to take advantage of character creation tools and a robust rules compendium.

The Weekly LIVE 188 – Open Letter to D&D, Hasbro Hires Pinkertons, Hobgoblin Kickstarter and Pathfinder 2E Remaster

D&D historian Ben Riggs offers an open letter to the game’s current publishers with advice for not making the same mistakes twice. Ben Riggs is a D&D historian and author of the book Slaying the Dragon: A Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons.

When Magic: The Gathering cards turned up on YouTube last week, publisher Wizards of the Coast sent private investigators from Pinkerton to retrieve them. The resulting confrontation reportedly frightened one woman to tears, and resulted in the confiscation of nearly two dozen boxes of cards by private investigators. Wizards confirmed the incident to Polygon. Meanwhile, the presenter denies anything illegal occurred.

Paizo announced an all-new effort this morning with the reveal of the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project happening this year. The company will release four new hardcover rulebooks designed to provide a new entry point for Second Edition, with the first two books being revitalized versions of the Player Core and GM Core books, set to be released this November. Followed by the Monster Core (March 2024) and  Player Core 2 (July 2024), completing the remastered presentation of the core rules. The new rulebooks are compatible with existing Second Edition items with improvements, incorporating comprehensive errata and rules updates, as well as being easier-to-access volumes with some of the latest content.

Wizards of the Coast has announced a new “Iconic Party” for their official Japanese release of Dungeons and Dragons, set to come out later in 2023. The new party was revealed by the official Wizards D&D JP account as part of the localization effort for the D&D Essentials Kit. The party was designed by artist Chomoran, and has already caused excitement within the community.

More and more Games Workshop looks to be trying to remove the individual creators from everything they produce. From codex books and game systems, right down to their presenters and tutorials, identities have become non-existent in Nottingham. It seems like GW has made their painting team even more generic than ever before, as they are taking out any recognition for the artists in their tutorials, and you can only see the creator’s hands

It is with great pride and pleasure that Dream Pod 9 launches our Heavy Gear 4th Edition Roleplaying Game Kickstarter. Writing and basic layout of the Heavy Gear 4th Ed RPG Rulebook is complete with a massive 480 page count. But it still needs tons of new artwork, hence the reason for the Kickstarter. Our goal is to raise the money for new artwork, and pay for the work done so far. Heavy Gear is a science fiction franchise produced by Dream Pod 9. The first edition of the beloved roleplaying game debuted in 1995 and has since expanded to include many other products including the Heavy Gear Blitz tabletop wargame and hundreds of pewter, resin and plastic miniatures for the game.

VAGABOND is a “lean-and-mean” tabletop roleplaying game, laser-focused on practical play with a modern TTRPG feel. Drawing inspiration from Medieval romance, dungeon synth, and the litany of dungeon crawlers to come before it, VAGABOND is a hybrid tabletop roleplaying game that blends old school utility with modern TTRPG character expression and sensibilities. It also takes inspiration from both Eastern and Western influences, with the potential for a Goblin Gunslinger to be delving a mummy’s tomb alongside a Harpy Dancer in search of the fabled Excalibur.

The Weekly LIVE 184 – BattleTech Mercenaries Hits $4.6 Million, Joe Manganiello’s Dragonlance, Year Zero Licenses Released and Terminator 2 Sourcebook

The next chapter of BattleTech’s titanic resurgence is the Mercenaries Kickstarter campaign and has hit $4.6 million as of this writing. The new campaign introduces more than 50 new designs, including ’Mechs, armored and support vehicles, a VTOL, additional battle armor, and a new aerospace fighter–all to the same high-quality standards and is ready to play right out of the box.

During the recent D&D Direct, Manganiello offered a brief update on the documentary he’s filming for Wizards of the Coast to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons’ 50th Anniversary. Before diving into it, he took a moment to acknowledge how the game had informed his love of stories. Then, Manganiello revealed that it led to his working with Wizards of the Coast on a live-action television adaptation of the Dragonlance novels, which he loves. The Dragonlance novels were initially written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, though many other authors have written stories for the series since.

Free League Publishing today officially released their two new open game licenses for community creators: a Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for their upcoming fantasy RPG Dragonbane. The Year Zero Engine FTL comes with an updated Standard Reference Document (SRD). All three documents are now available for creators to use.

The Terminator 2: Judgment Day sourcebook for the Terminator RPG adds stats for the liquid metal T-1000, as well as allowing players to play as reprogrammed T-800 models on the side of the human resistance – similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s heroic android. As in the original Terminator RPG and its campaign book based on the first movie, players can also just play as bog-standard humans faced with the threat of robotic terminators. Those resistance troops now include an elite force of Time Displacement Commandos who hop between the game’s settings of the 1980s, 1990s and the Future War in an attempt to bring down Skynet.
