Gen Con Alleged TCG Thieves Identified as Board Game Designers:The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has identified two individuals, Thomas J. Dunbar and Andrew Pearson Giaume, as persons of interest in the theft of $300,000 worth of trading card game (TCG) cards from Gen Con 2023. Dunbar and Giaume are board game designers and had reportedly attended Gen Con, possibly to promote their original board game, Castle Assault. Security footage showed them carrying TCG cards out of the convention center.

Daggerheart is a tabletop RPG that combines defined rules with narrative flair. It features a two D12 dice system where players roll dice for Hope and Fear, with the higher roll determining the outcome. Characters have ancestries, hometowns, and classes with associated domains. The game promotes collaborative world-building, allowing players to contribute to the game’s setting. Death mechanics offer unique options, including going out in a blaze of glory or risking hope and fear dice rolls. The game focuses on mechanical crunch and narrative storytelling, offering a balance between the two.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the Fire and Ice Miniatures Adventure Game, based on the animated film by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta. The game can be played as a board game or a roleplaying game and is set to release in May. Players take on the roles of heroes from the film’s storyline, battling against the forces of evil using miniatures, cards, and dice. The game includes customizable maps and aims to capture the fantasy world of the film.

JOYRIDE: Survival of the Fastest is a fast-paced racing board game where skillful driving takes precedence over pure speed. Up to four players hit the track, experiencing collisions, wacky items, and dramatic driver abilities. The game includes customizable maps and features interactions between players. The Weekly LIVE 135 – Beyond the Gates of Antares 2E, Hasbro Buys D&D Beyond, Pathfinder 5E, Fearsome Wilderness RPG and 40k Birthday Cards

Beyond the Gates of Antares created by Tim and Rick Priestley and published by Warlord Games is being discontinued. The miniatures will continue to be produced by Skytrex. The game will get a free second edition from the original creators and a new website to support the game separate from Warlord. So players of the game are not being abandoned and thankfully the games remains in the hands of its creators.

Hasbro buys D&D Beyond from Fandom for almost $150 million. This will create more of an ecosystem for Wizards of the Coast to offer digital materials for the game and also collect valuable data from its players. Both the president of Hasbro and Wizards are former Microsoft executives, so this first major purchase of a digital platform is not surprising. D&D Beyond will retain its original management and continue as usual with the only change being the oversight of Hasbro. The only missing piece of the puzzle is a virtual tabletop. Will Roll20 be next?

A quick side note. We missed the news a few weeks back that Paizo will be converting one of their Pathfinder Adventure Paths, Abomination Vaults, for Dungeons and Dragons 5E. Is this just an attempt by Paizo to reach a wider audience and boost the sales of their adventures or does this mean the beginning of the end for Pathfinder? According to Roll20 session data Pathfinder has slipped considerably in recent years with D&D accounting more than 50% of online game sessions.

Fearsome Wilderness is an RPG using the Year Zero Engine about a prison ship that crashes on a densely wooded planet inhabited by unnatural fearsome critters of American lumberjack folklore. The horror is compounded by the fact that waking up from such an extended period of hibernation can do strange things to the mind. A free trial version of the game is available on DriveThruRPG.

Tainted Grail, the boardgame by Awaken Realms, is getting a sequel called Kings of Ruin. The sequel will be crowdfunded on Gamefound, their tabletop funding platform that launched earlier this year. The original game that was released in 2018 the biggest Kickstarter of that year, raising over $6.4 million and is now getting a second edition as part of this release. The new edition of the game promises more refined mechanics and gameplay with additional storylines. Hopefully this will help them establish Gamefound as a legitimate alternative to Kickstarter.

They are targeted at beginners, but will they cannibalize their pre-painted offerings? Unearthed Arcana is now officially off D&D Beyond. This previously served to circulate playtest materials, but it may have created more controversy for WotC than it was worth. Finally, we discuss the odd offering that is Warhammer+ It is a costly venture that Games Workshop has zero experience in doing well. Their previous apps and video content would not command a subscription price. So what is the motive? Leaving physical products to license an IP or making yourself appealing to Hasbro for sale? Only the heretical forces of the immaterium know!

Five Parsecs from Home is a solo adventure wargame. by Ivan Sorensen. Modiphius is publishing a physical copy of the third edition. Reign in Hell is fast, brutal demonic themed tabletop wargame by Adam Loper and Vince Venturella at Snarling Badger Games. Similar to Warcry and Kill Team even down to using the same size playmats. Both games are minitures agnostic rulesets to play with miniatures and terrain you probably already have. And finally the Star Wars sequel trilogy is sited as an example in a current legal decision, proving the with legal precedence those films do suck.
