On June 29, 2024, Roll20 detected unauthorized access to an administrative account, which was promptly blocked within an hour. An investigation revealed that personal information such as names, email addresses, last known IP addresses, and the last four digits of stored credit cards might have been exposed. However, full payment details and passwords were not compromised. Despite having no evidence of data misuse, Roll20 is notifying users as a precaution and has committed to enhancing their security measures. Users concerned about their data can contact Roll20’s support.

Modiphius Entertainment is moving its UK warehousing and order fulfillment to a new partner, promising cheaper and faster shipping. The transition may cause delays for orders placed after 5 PM BST on July 5. Digital orders and orders from the US store will not be affected. To compensate for delays, a 15% discount is offered on most physical products using the code SHIPPINGDELAY. Pre-orders, especially for Fallout: Factions, will be prioritized to minimize impact.

Acheron Games announced a new project, HELLUVA TOWN, a cartoon gangster RPG with illustrations by Shawn Dickinson. The rulebook features a poker card-based system, pre-generated characters, a neighborhood map, and various additional materials like an artbook, stickers, pins, and a themed T-shirt. The game combines elements from Cuphead, Looney Tunes, and gangster movies, creating a unique and chaotic RPG experience.

Modiphius Entertainment launched a new TTRPG, Five Parsecs From Home: Tactics, with three books available for pre-order. This game allows solo or cooperative sci-fi skirmish adventures with procedurally generated battles, character progression, and a variety of enemies and objectives. The game supports both small skirmishes and larger battles, and it is miniatures-agnostic. A seven-stage narrative solo campaign is included, along with expansions for more tactical options and adventures.

Roll20 has acquired Demiplane, a character management and creation toolset, to enhance its virtual tabletop (VTT) platform. This acquisition aims to create a seamless user experience for tabletop RPG players, allowing them to buy RPG content, manage characters, and play games in one place. Roll20 CEO Ankit Lal emphasized the goal of connecting gamers and providing a comprehensive digital toolkit for various game systems. Demiplane’s integration will support new game systems and Kickstarter campaigns with digital options. Demiplane CEO Peter Romenesko mentioned efforts to merge the two platforms’ features. The acquisition won’t immediately impact users, but Demiplane’s development team, minus executive Adam Bradford, will stay intact. Bradford has joined SmiteWorks, the owner of Fantasy Grounds, as Chief Development Officer.

Steamforged Games has acquired the Iron Kingdoms universe, including the Warmachine wargame, Formula P3 paints, and the Iron Kingdoms RPG series, from Privateer Press. This acquisition aims to enhance the gaming experience for players through a collaboration between Steamforged and Privateer Press on design and development. Steamforged, known for its successful game development, plans to transition the range to its website, ensuring a smooth changeover while honoring existing orders. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the miniature gaming community, with continued support for related events and upcoming releases, including a Kickstarter for the Iron Kingdoms RPG.

Meta has confirmed that it uses public Instagram images to train its AI image generator, sparking outrage among users, especially artists. Many are considering leaving Instagram due to this and the platform’s declining reach. Despite the backlash, opting out is complicated and mainly available to EU users. Superstar artist J. Scott Campbell advised artists to remain on major platforms like Instagram for business growth, though he has joined the artist-friendly platform Cara. Cara promises to filter out AI-generated content and offers an alternative for those concerned about AI’s ethical issues. Campbell also suggests artists build direct connections with their audience through mailing lists.

SmiteWorks, the developer behind the virtual tabletop software Fantasy Grounds, has hired Adam Bradford as its Chief Development Officer. Bradford, known for founding D&D Beyond and leading Demiplane, brings significant experience to his new role. At SmiteWorks, he will focus on expanding Fantasy Grounds’ market presence, enhancing user engagement, and improving user experience. Doug Davison, President of SmiteWorks, expressed confidence in Bradford’s ability to drive growth and innovation. Bradford is enthusiastic about contributing to the success of Fantasy Grounds and aims to modernize its visual identity.

The Weekly LIVE 242 – Darkness at the Brink of Ohio, One More Multiverse, Greyhawk 2024 and Soloman Kane RPG

“Darkness at the Brink of Ohio” is a new solo tabletop roleplaying game designed by Banana Chan. The game follows the transformation of a late-night radio DJ into something horrific and otherworldly. Set in Akron, Ohio, players choose one of three characters (a clinical lab tech, a gas station attendant, or a security guard) as they listen to a horrific event involving DJ Mike from 106.6: The Brink. The game includes a soundtrack released for free on YouTube. Themes in this solo RPG include parasocial relationships and hypervisibility within a small fanbase. The book will be approximately 100-125 pages with a cover illustrated by Michael Croteau.

One More Multiverse, a virtual tabletop app, is closing down after four years. It offered pixel-art sprites and a user-friendly interface for playing RPGs online. The app supported games like Blades in the Dark and Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast. Despite efforts, sustainability became an issue. Assets and verses created by players will remain accessible for 90 days. The closure announcement precedes the official release date for Yazeba’s. Players have 90 days to download or screenshot their creations. A well-crafted alternative to platforms like Roll20 and D&D Beyond, it’s unfortunate to see it go.

The 2024 edition of Dungeons & Dragons will feature Greyhawk as a sample setting in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Greyhawk, one of the original D&D campaign settings created by Gary Gygax, will be showcased with a double-sided poster map including the City of Greyhawk and the Flanaess. The setting is presented as a template for Dungeon Masters to create their own worlds, with enough detail to bring Greyhawk to life but also leaving room for customization. The release is part of D&D’s 50th-anniversary celebration, highlighting Greyhawk’s classic fantasy elements and its potential for new adventures. The Dungeon Master’s Guide is set to release on November 12, 2024.

The Savage World of Solomon Kane RPG is based on the works of Robert E. Howard and allows players to embark on adventures as Solomon Kane, a hero battling evil in the 17th century. The game emphasizes themes of good versus evil and encourages gamemasters to create a grim setting where players can fight against darkness. The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE) system is used for its simplicity and ease of play. The content for this RPG is Kickstarter Exclusive and will not be available through retail.

MEKBORG and STEEL PSALM are two books that take the raw, old-school, d20-friendly rules of MÖRKBORG and dip them headfirst into post-apocalyptic, mechanical, MEK-KNIGHT mayhem, drawing inspiration from robot-on-robot combat, doom metal aesthetics, and more. The Deck of Sexy Things is a deck of playing cards designed for Dungeon Masters to handle romantic/sexual encounters in tabletop role-playing games. The cards will be fully agnostic, suitable for any race, gender, or orientation in characters.They can be used as a standard 52-card French-suited deck for various purposes. Each card features artwork by the artist 13th Warlock, portraying scenes for different circumstances (positive, neutral, negative, or weird). The crowdfunding campaign will Include game mechanics for various gaming systems such as AD&D, D&D 5E, Pathfinder, Castles & Crusades, Savage Worlds, FAST Core, and 13th Age. The deck will be printed on premium, casino-quality card stock for durability and high-resolution printing. Stretch goals include a Card Art Book PDF, Call of Cthulhu deck rules, Science Fiction Jokers, and a free PDF of The Folio: Black Label #1 Adventure.

Goodman Games plans to bring Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) to Roll20 through a crowdfunding campaign. DCC is an old-school fantasy dungeon-crawling RPG featuring unique mechanics and a challenging character progression system. The Roll20 integration includes all DCC mechanics, iconic adventures, and a campaign path from level 0 to 3. The crowdfunding campaign will launch in early February and aims to fund the complete DCC integration on Roll20.

Tabletop designers are organizing a game jam to create a megadungeon in memory of game designer and activist Jennell Jaquays.The game jam, named Return to Perinthos, encourages participants to submit dungeon content inspired by classic D&D adventure Caverns of Thracia. Crowdfunding proceeds will support Jaquays’ family, and profits from wholesale and retail sales will benefit Trans Lifeline, a grassroots nonprofit. Submissions are accepted until February 1st, and the project aims to create a diverse, system-agnostic dungeon.

Ars Magica, an RPG set in mythic Europe in the 1200s, is getting a definitive 5th Edition. The new edition, called Ars Magica 5th Edition Definitive, features extensive revisions and updates, including new art and layout. The crowdfunding campaign is set to launch in fall 2024, offering a deluxe, full-color, hardcover print edition with an open license. Atlas Games has also “resurrected” the original printer files for the Ars Magica 5th Edition line, making the entire back catalog compatible with the new edition.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have developed a tool called “Nightshade” that can poison AI models by subtly altering images at the pixel level. This can cause AI models to misinterpret or hallucinate images. The tool is intended to protect artists’ work from being used without permission to train AI models.

This is an epic campaign for the Vaesen Nordic Horror Roleplaying game, consisting of five mysteries set in 19th-century Sweden. Roll20, a popular online tabletop gaming platform, is integrating Dungeon Scrawl, a real-time map-making tool, into its features. This integration allows Dungeon Masters to create and incorporate custom maps into their online Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. Players can also create maps in real-time as they progress through the game, offering dynamic storytelling opportunities. Dungeon Scrawl provides various customization options, including grid shapes, furniture, and viewing perspectives. While many DMs already use Dungeon Scrawl maps, this integration streamlines the process, making it more accessible. Roll20 also has plans for further enhancements, such as easier map exports and a shared library of user-made maps, though no official timeline is provided.

Rez Nova has released the beta rules for Warzone Eternal. They contain everything needed to try the wargame including stat lines for units. The pledgemanger for the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter is also open and isn’t set to close until the end of this year. Warzone is back and the miniatures are coming next year!

Square Enix is releasing a Final Fantasy XIV tabletop RPG starter set in May 2024, allowing players to recreate characters and adventures from the MMORPG in a tabletop format. Additionally, Nagahama Roman Beer Company is launching three Final Fantasy XIV-themed whiskeys inspired by the game’s starting cities.

OpenAI faces a lawsuit from The Authors Guild and several prominent authors, including George R.R. Martin and John Grisham, for copyright infringement. They allege that OpenAI used their copyrighted works to train large language models without permission, potentially harming their livelihoods by enabling the creation of derivative works. Other authors have also filed similar lawsuits against OpenAI for copyright infringement, creating a legal challenge for generative AI companies.

In July, Roll20 and DriveThruRPG announced they come together under Ankit Lal. Don’t call it a merger; call it a joint venture. The two have been pretty much operating in unison for the last few months, and now marketplaces for digital content are getting closer together.At the time it was announced that the community content program that OneBookShelf, the DriveThruRPG parent company, has with Wizards of the Coast would expand to include Roll20.Right now, third-party publishers who follow the rules can create and sell D&D adventures and other content from the DMsGuild. As of this week, those modules can also be created for Roll20.

 Role’s co-founder isn’t worried about D&D’s plans for the online RPG space. CEO and co-founder Elle Dwight offered two polite reminders that Role, the streaming roleplay platform she co-founded and runs, is not a virtual tabletop but a toolset for “conversation gaming”. After crowdfunding $106,982 on Kickstarter in 2020, Role has been successfully simmering among the actual play and online RPG space. That scene is quickly expanding, though. Wizards of the Coast announced its own plans for a dedicated, in-house virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons earlier this year, and smaller companies such as One More Multiverse, Foundry and even Roll20 are renegotiating what exactly they can offer players who suddenly find themselves with a wealth of options when it comes to playing games digitally with friends.

When you think of Dungeons and Dragons, the world’s most popular RPG, you might think of heroic orcs, magical elves, or Tieflings running an inn somewhere. But you might not have thought that the tabletop game of fantasy adventures is a game in need of a recurrent spending environment. And you’d be forgiven too. Because unless you’re a WotC or Hasbro executive, odds are really good you’ve never thought the words “D&D under-monetized” before.According to an investor-focused “fireside chat” with Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, and WotC’s new CEO Cynthia Williams, D&D is under-monetized.

OneBookShelf and Roll20 have made a deal to offer Dms Guild content on Roll20. This will increase the amount of fan-made content available to dungeon masters tremendously. Is this also the beginning of Wizards of the Coast focusing on Roll20 for a possible acquisition? They seem to doing a bit of that these days. OneBookShelf updated their Conduct Guidelines for publishers and have rubbed a lot of creators on DriveThruRPG the wrong way. It includes limitations to external linking and price controls as well as focus on Hostile Marketing. Which is vaguely defined as any type of promotion that courts controversy or bad press for OBS. Chris is not happy and we will find out why!

Alice is Missing, the text message based TTPRG created by a producer from Critical Role, has been optioned by Paramount. GenCon should be prepared to move to California and be overrun by scouts and producers from Hollywood to find the “next big thing” to make into a movie. Creative bankruptcy or trend chasing? TTRPG designers better start moving to LA and finding agents. Keyforge is back with new ownership.

Keyforge, the card game that went on hiatus during the pandemic has been purchased Asmodee by Ghost Galaxy, a company run by former Fantasy Flight CEO, Christian T. Petersen. They are bringing along some of the principals involved in the games production so things may be able to pick up where they left off. This should be good news for fans of the unique decks built by software card game. And finally, someone has created a competitor to Itch.io by making an exact copy of the website right down to the CSS and stealing the games being sold there. They want to offer an alternative to creators that want to include NFTs and blockchain in their games. The response to these thieves will make your non-native English speaking day.

The Weekly LIVE 135 – Beyond the Gates of Antares 2E, Hasbro Buys D&D Beyond, Pathfinder 5E, Fearsome Wilderness RPG and 40k Birthday Cards

Beyond the Gates of Antares created by Tim and Rick Priestley and published by Warlord Games is being discontinued. The miniatures will continue to be produced by Skytrex. The game will get a free second edition from the original creators and a new website to support the game separate from Warlord. So players of the game are not being abandoned and thankfully the games remains in the hands of its creators.

Hasbro buys D&D Beyond from Fandom for almost $150 million. This will create more of an ecosystem for Wizards of the Coast to offer digital materials for the game and also collect valuable data from its players. Both the president of Hasbro and Wizards are former Microsoft executives, so this first major purchase of a digital platform is not surprising. D&D Beyond will retain its original management and continue as usual with the only change being the oversight of Hasbro. The only missing piece of the puzzle is a virtual tabletop. Will Roll20 be next?

A quick side note. We missed the news a few weeks back that Paizo will be converting one of their Pathfinder Adventure Paths, Abomination Vaults, for Dungeons and Dragons 5E. Is this just an attempt by Paizo to reach a wider audience and boost the sales of their adventures or does this mean the beginning of the end for Pathfinder? According to Roll20 session data Pathfinder has slipped considerably in recent years with D&D accounting more than 50% of online game sessions.

Fearsome Wilderness is an RPG using the Year Zero Engine about a prison ship that crashes on a densely wooded planet inhabited by unnatural fearsome critters of American lumberjack folklore. The horror is compounded by the fact that waking up from such an extended period of hibernation can do strange things to the mind. A free trial version of the game is available on DriveThruRPG.

Tainted Grail, the boardgame by Awaken Realms, is getting a sequel called Kings of Ruin. The sequel will be crowdfunded on Gamefound, their tabletop funding platform that launched earlier this year. The original game that was released in 2018 the biggest Kickstarter of that year, raising over $6.4 million and is now getting a second edition as part of this release. The new edition of the game promises more refined mechanics and gameplay with additional storylines. Hopefully this will help them establish Gamefound as a legitimate alternative to Kickstarter.
