FryxGames CEO, Enoch Fryxelius, defends the use of AI in the Terraforming Mars project on Facebook. The company’s next board game, “Fates,” will not include AI, addressing concerns raised in an interview transcript by Polygon. Fryxelius emphasizes that AI was used for artwork in Terraforming Mars but assures that no jobs were lost, though he acknowledges potential impact on illustrators. The next game, “Fates,” will feature exclusively human-made graphics, with a focus on paying a living wage to illustrators.

Tainted Grail, a dark fantasy board game, is getting a tabletop RPG adaptation called “Tainted Grail: Song of a Dying World.” The RPG, based on the Shadows of Esteren system, explores the world of Avalon and introduces new characters known as Guardians of Avalon. The game system emphasizes roleplaying, character progression, and includes mechanics from the original board game. The RPG is being developed by Studio Agate, with a crowdfunding campaign planned for November.

Free League announces the expansion “Ad Astra” for the Mutant: Year Zero tabletop RPG. The expansion takes players from Earth’s surface into orbit, introducing a space-themed campaign. A pre-order for Ad Astra is available, offering early access to a full PDF ahead of the physical release next year. In addition to the expansion, there is a reprint of all Mutant: Year Zero core books, including Mutant: Mechatron.

Modiphius Entertainment introduces Cohors Cthulhu, a game using the 2d20 system, set in ancient Rome. Changes to the system include the addition of the attribute “Gravitas” for serious and dignified actions. The focus shifts from firearms to melee weapons, with a robust combat system and hidden facets of player characters. Cultural and caste choices play a crucial role in character development within the context of ancient Rome.

The Weekly LIVE 196 – Conan Leaves Modiphius, Dreams and Machines, Gloomhaven Grand Festival and Renegade Studios Ceasing & Desisting

Modiphius is holding a clearance sale before transferring the license for the Conan Roleplaying Game to Monolith. All physical and digital content from Modiphius will be discontinued on June 30th. While many physical books for the game have sold out, PDF copies of all the books are still available. The Conan Roleplaying Game has been well-received with various supplements and accessories released alongside the core rules. There is also a Quickstart Adventure available for those interested.

Modiphius, known for their official tabletop RPGs for Dune, Fallout, and Star Trek, is venturing into a new concept called Dreams and Machines. This post-apocalyptic sci-fi RPG aims to attract curious players with a starter set, making it more accessible. Pre-orders for Dreams and Machines are open on Modiphius’ website, and the game will be showcased at Gen Con 2023. The TRPG is set on a planet isolated from Earth due to a devastating robotic uprising, where society is slowly rebuilding while living in fear of dormant mecha known as Wakers.

Cephlofair Games has launched a significant crowdfunding campaign called the “Gloomhaven Grand Festival” to fund multiple Gloomhaven-related projects. This includes a new edition of Gloomhaven, a Gloomhaven Roleplaying Game, and a comprehensive miniatures set. The campaign has already raised over $1 million, surpassing half of its $2 million goal. Gloomhaven is a highly acclaimed campaign-style board game known for its dungeon-crawling gameplay. A Kickstarter campaign for its sequel, Frosthaven, previously held the record as the most-funded tabletop Kickstarter, raising nearly $13 million.

Renegade Game Studios, which produces licensed TTRPGs like Transformers, GI Joe, and Vampire: The Masquerade, has issued a cease and desist letter to a small creator using the word “renegade.” The Polyhedral Knights had a Kickstarter campaign for their game called ‘Renegade City,’ which is a tabletop RPG centered around playing criminals using dominoes instead of dice. Renegade Game Studios’ claim to the word ‘renegade’ has sparked controversy and may result in unintended negative consequences, known as the Streisand Effect. The Polyhedral Knights received a letter from Renegade Game Studios’ lawyers demanding the removal of the word ‘Renegade’ from their game’s title.

The Weekly LIVE 137 – WotC Ignores Original Creators, Modiphius Announces Cohors Cthulhu, Warzone Eternal Kickstarter Launch Date and Kutulu Hits Japan

Wizards of the Coast has announced the return of two popular settings now for 5E. Unfortunately, according to Twitter, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, creators of Dragonlance and Jeff Grubb, creator of Spelljammer, were not involved in the announcement and found out at the same time everyone did during the announcement. We talked previously about the lawsuit involving the new Dragonlance novels. It doesn’t make WotC look great to ignore the original creators of these settings. Is this to emphasize a break from the past or a chance to save some money?

During the D&D Direct announcement last week, Modiphius Entertainment had a strange announcement of their own. In an attempt to possible distract from WotC, Modiphius had an hour long livestream announcement that was just a torchlit wall that eventually crumbles after a very long wait with only some slight change in lighting. They revealed their new TTRPG Cohors Cthulhu set in ancient Rome, a spinoff of Against the God Themselves, set in the same universe as Achtung! Cthulhu. I guess they were following the old adage “if you can’t beat ‘em, just be boring and confusing” or something like that.

We finally have a date for the Kickstarter campaign for Warzone Eternal. It will be launching May 17th, but be sure to listen to the entire livestream to make sure that date is correct. We talked with Alex Kanous from Res Nova Games previously about the new game and crowdfunding campaign. This should be a fun game to follow and hopefully a big success on Kickstarter. Hopefully with either the Cardinal’s blessing or the influence of the Dark Symmetry we will see the return of wargaming in the Mutant Chronicles universe.

Finally, there is a new release in Japan a a Swedish TTRPG, Kutulu by Mikael Bergström. Call of Cthulhu is the most popular tabletop roleplaying game in Japan. This is a much more rules light and streamlined d6 system. The insanity mechanic especially stands out as a great innovation to the Lovecraft setting. The Swedish language PDF is available as pay-what-you-want PDF on DriveThruRPG. With a little language software translation magic you can get an idea of how this system works.
