Wizards of the Coast’s virtual tabletop project, Sigil, appears to be in trouble after mass layoffs eliminated 90% of its development team shortly after launch. Originally announced as part of the One D&D initiative in 2022, Sigil was intended to integrate with D&D Beyond and provide a high-end 3D alternative to existing VTTs like Roll20. However, the platform struggled with performance issues, unclear monetization plans, and a lack of a distinct purpose. Despite high-profile showcases, its reception was lukewarm, with a rushed release in February 2025 requiring a paid D&D Beyond subscription for full access. The layoffs suggest Wizards may be abandoning the project, leaving questions about future updates and support. With only a small team remaining, Sigil risks becoming another failed digital experiment by Wizards of the Coast.

The Wildsea, a narrative-driven weird-fantasy TTRPG by Mythworks, is set in a world overrun by rampant greenery, where chainsaw-powered ships navigate a vast, toxic forest canopy. Players take on roles as wildsailors—descendants of humanity and other strange beings—exploring ruins, hunting creatures, and trading rare goods. The complete Wildsea game line is now available for $19.95 in a Bundle of Holding, including the 368-page core rulebook, two sourcebooks (Storm & Root and Ship Gardens), and two full-length adventures (One-Armed Scissor and Red Right Hand). While the game offers deep immersion and unique mechanics, some rules may require careful interpretation. This limited-time bundle provides everything needed to dive into the richly detailed world of the Verdancy.

Blackpowder & Brimstone is a grimdark fantasy RPG by Benjamin Tobitt, published under Free League’s Workshop label and powered by the MÖRK BORG ruleset. Set in a world of religious schism and war, players take on the roles of desperate adventurers navigating a conflict between the Orthodox and Puritans of the Church of the Sacred Blood. The game blends swashbuckling action with gothic folk horror, featuring black powder weapons, demonic threats, and forbidden magic with dangerous consequences. It offers a rules-light, art-heavy experience with unique weapons, deadly combat, and rich lore. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Blackpowder & Brimstone is now available through Free League’s store and DriveThruRPG, promising intense, fast-paced gameplay where survival and profit go hand in hand.

RipCrypt, a fast-paced “dungeon sprint” TTRPG, is set to launch in 2025 through a partnership between indie studio Gritsilk Games and major publisher Modiphius Entertainment. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the game will be released in both retail and online stores, featuring a core rulebook, premium edition, and a control board. Set in the Undergrade, a maze of crypts and catacombs, RipCrypt blends tactical gameplay with immersive storytelling, catering to both newcomers and veteran RPG players. The game emphasizes quick character creation, fast combat resolution, and streamlined mechanics, with a roll-high d8 dice pool and unique progression system. With its lo-fi analog aesthetics, concise 148-page rulebook, and a wealth of illustrated content, RipCrypt aims to offer an engaging, accessible RPG experience that redefines the dungeon-crawling genre.

The Weekly LIVE 174 – Privateer Press’ Iron Kingdoms Statement, Non-OGL Bundle of Holding, Free League Two New Licenses and Hollywood 1947

Privateer Press releases a statement about their Iron Kingdoms RPG. The setting became the inspiration for their miniatures game War Machine. It uses the OGL and depending on what WotC does it may need to find another system or license.

There are two Bundle of Holding if you are looking for non-OGL TTRPGs. These bundles are DRM-free PDFs and offer a huge variety of gaming systems for gamemasters and players to try out.

Free League has announced two new game licenses. Because of recent OGL events they have updated their Year Zero Engine OGL and SRD and also a specific license for publishing third-party adventures for their successfully Kickstarted upcoming Dragonbane RPG. 

Facade Games has the fifth entry in their Dark Cities game series on Kickstarter. Hollywood 1947 is a social deduction game that is set in the blacklisting-crazy, red scare Hollywood studio system. Players take the role of a studio employee working on their latest film.THe components like all their previous games are gorgeous and the game box is a replica of a hardcover book that will sit perfectly alongside the previous games.

The Weekly LIVE 154 – Marvel Multiverse RPG Release Date, Moonbreaker, Settler Catan AR, eBay Buys TCGPlayer and DCC Bundle of Holding

The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game announced a release date for its upcoming tabletop RPG. The officially licensed RPG will release a core rulebook in June 2023, followed by an adventure supplement in July. Both books written by Matt Forbeck and artwork by Iban Coello. The core rulebook will package everything a group needs to create their own superheroes and learn the rules. Marvel Multiverse RPG uses three six-sided dice for its s616 system that is both a nod to the prime Marvel universe and Forbeck’s answer to heroic combat where power levels between characters can vary wildly. There is a free playtest still available before the release.

Moonbreaker, a miniature skirmish game on PC, by Unknown Worlds, the developer of Subnautica, wants to make the ‘world’s best digital miniatures game’. Videogames owe a lot to their tabletop counterparts, especially when it comes to turn-based strategy and tactics, but one of the best parts of fielding armies, gets overlooked in the digital realm: model painting. Moonbreaker is trying to do something that more like real tabletop, but for PC gamers. Following the reveal of the One D&D VTT are digital miniatures going to become a thing?

The Settlers of Catan will become a holographic AR board game. Jeri Ellsworth’s intriguing AR headset will create a new version of Catan, one of the most critically acclaimed board games ever made and one that averages over a million copies sold per year. The boardgame will leap off tabletop thanks to a unique augmented reality gaming system that’s been in development for over a decade now. Tilt Five, a startup founded by a former Valve engineer. The company has already had two Kickstarters and has developed 21 AR games.

eBay is acquiring TCGplayer, one of the largest trading card marketplaces. The online auction website continues its push into collectible trading cards. The deal, worth up to $295 million, marks eBay’s latest push into the growing trading card market, which experienced a huge boom during the pandemic. eBay has already invested a lot into trading cards recently including a sports card valuation service and a temperature controlled vault for buyers and sellers to store their cards. Finally, news NOT about things going digital.

Goodman Games have their flagship range in the Bundle of Holding, but only until September 12th. Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG rulebook is back on offer along with introductory modules and expansions. There’s also a new DCC Chaos Rising offer. Both bundles give you fifty Dungeons of amazing Goodman Games RPG value.

The Weekly LIVE 147 – AI Plays D&D, WotC Japan, Heavy Fines for Cyberbullying and Fading Suns 4E

A Redditor posted his results from an experiment with the OpenAI’s GPT-3 software. It was an attempt to get the AI to act as a player character. The test was not completely successful, but yielded some interesting results. The AI played a Wizard and was fond of the 5E spell, Magic Missile. Soon virtual tabletops may no longer need human beings to run fantasy roleplay games. The future is very bright.

A surprise for the TTRPG gamers of Japan happened this week. Wizards of the Coast created an official Twitter account. They tweeted a message saying more information about the future will be announced later in July. This comes after the legal dispute with Gale Force 9 that lead to WotC taking direct control over their localization in Europe and, now apparently, in Japan.

Yesterday, as of this writing, the penalties for online insults and bullying have become more severe in Japan. This follows a high profile case of a Japanese professional female wrestler and reality star committing suicide due to online harrassment. The main perpetrators received a tiny fine of 9,000yen (US$75) each. The mother of the late wrestler held a press conference celebrating the toughening of punishment which now stands at a fine of 300,000yen (US$2,200).

This 2021 edition of the game is also getting ready to return to Kickstarter with a new expansion, Fading Suns: Lost Worlds. TSR is back! Again? Which one? They have started an IndieGoGo campaign to assist them in suing Wizards of the Coast for libel and slander, mostly concerning the disclaimer that has been added to legacy products. Cortex Prime, owned by Fandom has released the license details for fans interested in developing mods, etc. for the game. The fans are not happy. The agreement appears to give ownership of all free materials developed to Fandom. New expansion for Vaesen by Free League lets players leave the Nordic setting and explore folklore monsters in Britain and Ireland. EN Publishing loses the 200AD license and holds an enormous flash sale of all remaining stock. Forged in the Dark Bundle of Holding give you 4 RPGs using the system, including the original Blades in the Dark designed by John Harper and published by Evil Hat Productions , for only $10. Quite a deal if you have never tried the system and setting.

Dungeons and Dragons is coming to television with an official actual play show. It will be streaming on Twitch and the G4 website as well as the G4 cable channel on November 22. Purging of the Crucible is a new adventure available for the 2d20 Mutant Chronicles RPG. It will be available from Modiphius as a PDF and also shortly available as a print on demand 74-page colour softcover book. Southeast Asian tabletop designers and artists, Centaur Games, behind the A Thousand Thousand Islands have launched a Kickstarter for their first full-length tabletop RPG campaign book, Reach of the Roach God. Paizo President apologies for user data breach. Bundle of Holding revives the August 2016 Tribe 8 Bundle, featuring much of the Tribe 8 product line in beautiful new versions from Dream Pod 9.

This will be a collaboration with Genuine Entertainament similar to the previous Alien RPG. Mutant Crawl Classics, the post apocalypse version of Dungeon Crawl Classics, is on Bundle of Holding. Funcom okays Star Anvil Studios to produce a Secret World TTRPG based on their original MMO.

A great article with interviews on d20 Radio about the rise of single-artist TTRPGs by Egg Embry. Warhammer posts an inclusion statement. It shows a new social awareness at the company and also how you need to present yourself when you are worth more than a billion dollars. DC Comics leaves Diamond Distributors after 25 years, showing us a glimpse of the post-pandemic world. Swords and Wizardry is a streamlined version of White Box Dungeons and Dragons by Frog God Games. The Dark Eye has a second Bundle of Holding for the English language version. Wretched and Alone Game Jam deadline extended until the end of June. Itch.io raised over $5 million with its Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality.

Some of the most recent cancellations in the tabletop industry. Will GenCon be next? Adam J. Rose is the new head of Grim and Perilous, makers of Zweihander RPG. A list of virtual tabletop software to try in these self-isolating times. Most are offering free access to premium features or a discount for a license. Critical Role played a sponsored one-shot of the Bethesda Softworks videogame, Doom. We are still trying to figure out how they did it.  Bundle of Holding is offering a Solo Games Bundle, including the excellent Ironsworn RPG in the Starter Collection. The Farflung RPG may be our next scifi after dark tabletop session. Is it the only system capable of running the TV series, LEXX?
