The Weekly LIVE 222 – The Fellowship of the King, Don’t Look Back New Edition, Amazon Signs Warhammer and AI Art Accusations

Demetrious Polychron, author of “The Fellowship of the King,” lost a lawsuit against Amazon and JRR Tolkien’s estate, claiming infringement on his Lord of the Rings fanfic. Polychron demanded $250 million but now owes $134,000 in legal fees to the Tolkien Estate. The court ruled that Polychron’s book infringed upon Amazon’s Rings of Power series. The judge described Polychron’s lawsuit as “frivolous and unreasonably filed.”

Black Site Studios released a new edition of the Horror miniatures game, Don’t Look Back, featuring updates, revamped mechanics, and new characters. The edition includes bonus rules for Vehicles and Companions, incorporating previous expansions. The set includes 32mm resin miniatures and a new Core Rulebook.

Amazon Studios secured global rights to Warhammer 40,000, with Henry Cavill set to star and executive produce multiple projects. The deal covers series, films, and more. Cavill, a high-profile Warhammer fan, expressed excitement, and Amazon plans to work with Games Workshop and Vertigo Entertainment. The announcement follows Cavill’s involvement in various upcoming projects. Games Workshop announced a £2,500 end-of-year bonus for all employees as part of its 2023 profit share scheme. This comes after the release of Warhammer 40,000’s 10th Edition ruleset and the Leviathan box set. Additionally, Warhammer: The Old World is set to receive a robust reboot in 2024.

Wizards of the Coast denied claims that generative AI was used in artwork teasing the 2024 core rulebooks. Responding to social media allegations, the company stated that no generative AI was used, consistent with their artist guidelines. The artist, Nestor Ossandón, defended the process, sharing early sketches and work-in-progress versions. Concerns over AI-created artwork in the industry were raised following recent layoffs at Hasbro.

Nightfall Games discovered that artwork for Terminator 2 and RESIST on Kickstarter had AI-generated elements, identified as resembling the ‘Midjourney’ AI art generator. The company expressed disappointment, stating AI art is theft, and vowed to fix the issue. They are working with external artists to ensure AI-free art and implementing checks before payment and acceptance. The team thanked backers for their support.

Games Workshop is retiring many old Space Marine units from Warhammer 40,000, making way for the newer Primaris Space Marines. This move has upset some players who invested in the older models, but Games Workshop’s focus is on growing the Primaris range. Games Workshop reports record revenue, profits, and dividends in its annual report for the year 2023. The company remains committed to continuous development of its intellectual property and expanding its global reach.

Paizo partners with Mirrorscape, an extended reality (XR) tabletop gaming platform, to bring Pathfinder and Starfinder into augmented reality. Players can now experience these games in a more immersive and interactive way using mobile devices. Set to launch on iOS and Android on July 25th, Mirrorscape is already generating buzz among tabletop roleplaying gamers. It offers a truly immersive experience where players can interact with game pieces, terrains, and miniatures in realistic 3D, no matter their location. This innovative technology has received positive coverage from major outlets like Wired, Wargamer, GamesRadar, and Dicebreaker.

CJ Leung, known for the @DontStopThinking YouTube channel, is launching a new tabletop RPG called “Cloudbreaker Alliance” on Kickstarter. It is an anime-inspired fantasy RPG with a unique combat system and a focus on strategic gameplay.

Candela Obscura announces its second chapter with new players, including Brennan Lee Mulligan and Marisha Ray, exploring a new narrative unrelated to the first season. The horror RPG series will have a five-hour cinema premiere in select theaters.

DriveThruRPG updates its policy to ban content primarily written by AI language generators, acknowledging the challenge of enforcement. The platform trusts its community to offer unique works primarily based on human creativity.

What would Warhammer without the war be like? What if the green fields of a tabletop ‘battlefield’ were actually an apple orchard, or sheep pen, or a forest full of bugs? Well, there’s a whole online community of wargamers exploring that question, creating pacifist ‘peacegames’ that are delighting hobbyists and their kids alike.

Veteran TTRPG blogger, developer, publisher, and writer Owen K.C. Stephens suffered a pulmonary embolism in February, resulting in his hospitalization. While still recovering from that ailment, he was diagnosed with cancer (initially throught to be early stage 2, then rediagnosed to late stage 1). Though he has every intention of overcoming this challenge and producing game material for years to come, and despite having medical insurance, the medical bills have begun to pile up. The TTRPG industry has come together to create a mega-bundle to help, with all proceeds going to help Owen with those bills.  

A retail store in Akihabara will check IDs to prevent adults from buying and reselling Pokémon cards. In the wake of Pokémon cards totally selling out in Japan, it appears that one trading card store in the country’s Akihabara district has adopted some drastic measures: Bar adults from buying cards so kids can enjoy the hobby.

Warzone, the classic tabletop miniatures game of skirmishes in the techno-fantasy universe of Mutant Chronicles, returns with Warzone Eternal!  A massively popular miniatures game in the 1990s, Warzone captured the  imagination of players with its adrenaline-fueled imagery and its quick  and engaging ruleset. Res Nova seeks to recapture that spirit with Warzone Eternal and has assembled a crack team to do so. Warzone Eternal is a fast-playing skirmish  miniatures game in which players collect a force representing one of the factions locked in struggle across countless warzones – the powerful megacorporations of Bauhaus, Capitol, Cybertronic, Imperial, and Mishima, the hordes of necrobionic warriors of Algeroth, the Dark Legion Apostle of War, or humanity’s mystic warriors of the Light, the Brotherhood. Through scenario-driven battles, players will engage in the constant covert, or not so covert, fight for supremacy amongst the megacorporations or the never-ending battle against the darkness to preserve humanity – or destroy it.

The Weekly LIVE 100! WizKids Minis and Paints, Unearthed Arcana and Warhammer Plus

Our 100th episode! WizKids is creating a Dungeons and Dragons line of paints and miniatures on sprues, supposedly system agnostic. They are targeted at beginners, but will they cannibalize their pre-painted offerings? Unearthed Arcana is now officially off D&D Beyond. This previously served to circulate playtest materials, but it may have created more controversy for WotC than it was worth. Finally, we discuss the odd offering that is Warhammer+ It is a costly venture that Games Workshop has zero experience in doing well. Their previous apps and video content would not command a subscription price. So what is the motive? Leaving physical products to license an IP or making yourself appealing to Hasbro for sale? Only the heretical forces of the immaterium know!

The Weekly LIVE 090 – Warhammer Plus Announced, Netflix Wants to Make Games and Hybrid GenCon 2021

Games Workshop announced the platform for their eleven animated series. Warhammer Plus. No further details given until next month, neither price nor additional content. Netflix is actively looking into developing games and has approached veteran game designs. After the failure of Amazon, owner of Twitch, to become a game developer, it doesn’t make much sense. Finally, Asmodee and Paizo announced they will not attend the physical event in Indianapolis, but will provide virtual supports with online gaming sessions and Livestreams. There will also be PopUp GenCon support at local game stores.
