The Weekly LIVE 175 – Fifth Season TTRPG by Green Ronin, 1500 Publishers Support Paizo’s ORC, WotC vs Foundry VTT and 4 New Wargaming Books from Joseph McCullough and Osprey

The Fifth Season Roleplaying Game is designed for you to play out adventures and stories set in the world described in the Broken Earth trilogy of novels by N.K. Jemisin—a world where constant and unstable tectonic and volcanic activity threaten all life; a world whose peoples have learned to adapt in order to survive. It is a world where everyone learns that Father Earth hates his children and is always trying to kill them, where metal rusts and even stone crumbles, and the best you can do is be prepared for the next disaster.

Over the course of the last week, more than 1,500 tabletop RPG publishers, from household names going back to the dawn of the hobby to single proprietors just starting out with their first digital release, have joined together to pledge their support for the development of a universal system-neutral open license that provides a legal “safe harbor” for sharing rules mechanics and encourages innovation and collaboration in the tabletop gaming space.

Foundry VTT reacts to WotC OGL VTT policy:
“Yesterday, Wizards of the Coast shared a post Starting the OGL “Playtest” which introduces draft terms of a new Open Gaming License Version 1.2 (hereafter called OGL 1.2). This new license is intended to replace the prior Open Gaming License version 1.0a (OGL 1.0a) which has served and empowered the tabletop gaming industry since 2000. These new license terms are shared for public discussion after several false starts. “OGL Version 1.1” was a far more restrictive license – to the extent of not being an open license at all. A FAQ which circulated regarding “OGL Version 2.0″ maintained many of the objectionable restrictions in version 1.1 that prompted community outrage. This latest version (OGL 1.2) is a constructive step, doing away with many of the most dangerous clauses of version 1.1, but it is still regressive compared to the original OGL 1.0a.”

Osprey Games has announces four new game expansions created by veteran designer Joseph A. McCullough (Frostgrave, Stargrave), including two titles for Stargrave, a new sourcebook for The Silver Bayonet, and a new Frostgrave supplement.

The Weekly LIVE 174 – Privateer Press’ Iron Kingdoms Statement, Non-OGL Bundle of Holding, Free League Two New Licenses and Hollywood 1947

Privateer Press releases a statement about their Iron Kingdoms RPG. The setting became the inspiration for their miniatures game War Machine. It uses the OGL and depending on what WotC does it may need to find another system or license.

There are two Bundle of Holding if you are looking for non-OGL TTRPGs. These bundles are DRM-free PDFs and offer a huge variety of gaming systems for gamemasters and players to try out.

Free League has announced two new game licenses. Because of recent OGL events they have updated their Year Zero Engine OGL and SRD and also a specific license for publishing third-party adventures for their successfully Kickstarted upcoming Dragonbane RPG. 

Facade Games has the fifth entry in their Dark Cities game series on Kickstarter. Hollywood 1947 is a social deduction game that is set in the blacklisting-crazy, red scare Hollywood studio system. Players take the role of a studio employee working on their latest film.THe components like all their previous games are gorgeous and the game box is a replica of a hardcover book that will sit perfectly alongside the previous games.

This bundle includes hundreds and hundreds of books, I have no idea how many, but it is basically everything we have ever made using the OGL v1.0

#OpenDnD is a rallying cry under which creators and fans have unified to demand that WotC revoke the draconian 1.1 OGL and pledge to support the existing 1.0 OGL into future editions of their games. This isn’t an opportunity to litigate and tinker with a new license, but to return to the values of open gaming. Our community deserves an open future if we want our favorite games to not only survive, but thrive!!  What is #OpenDnD? An open letter on the Open Gaming License, to Wizards of the Coast.

Basic Fantasy Project productions will excise OGL content from its rules. It doesn’t matter whether Hasbro releases their new license or not. It doesn’t matter whether it stands up in court or not. Their attempt to invalidate the license we’ve always depended on and then to effectively steal what we’ve created demonstrates that they are an existential threat to our game. So, what do we do? We excise the OGL.

Players roll percentile dice against the Gamemaster-led opponents, or even themselves.

ENWorld has posted their top ten list of the Most Anticipated Games for 2023. This was an open vote by registered users on the ENWorld website. Did the game you are anxiously awaiting make the list?

A daily writing exercise was born in December of last year that spawned from a tweet  by Sean McCoy of Tuesday Knight Games, about his newest project and an image of his notebook. Design a room every day and at the end of the week you have a level and at the end of the year you have a 52 level dungeon. Using a daily planner schedule book, hopefully one with graph paper, you can take it wherever you go. Are you up for the challenge?

The Weekly LIVE 171 – Amazon Making Warhammer, Asmodee Steals GW’s Pricing, #OneDND and 2022 in Review

Amazon Studios today announced that it has secured global rights to Warhammer  40,000, based on the immensely popular intellectual property from Games Workshop (GAW) that has given rise to an immersive global hobby – Warhammer. The agreement encompasses rights to the universe across series, film, and more, and will sit alongside GAW’s activities as they continue to make the best miniatures in the world. This is the first deal of its kind for Amazon Studios for IP of this scale, and it allows the company to utilize the title across its entertainment businesses. Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout) is set to star in and executive produce the Warhammer 40,000 franchise across all Amazon Studios productions.

Asmodee’s pricing for its new terrain kits for Marvel Crisis Protocol are reminding us of the incredibly overpriced offering from Games Workshop. Discuss.

Dungeons and Dragons fans banded together to get #OpenDnD trending on Twitter. This tag emerged in response to recent activity that suggests Dungeons and Dragons might be considering cracking down on homebrew in One D&D.
