Hasbro has decided to step back from financing films based on its toys, following financial disappointments from movies like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Transformers One. While these films were critically appreciated, their box office returns fell short, prompting Hasbro to leave the movie-making business. The company is now open to licensing its brands for others to adapt into films but will no longer co-finance such projects. This decision is ironic given the massive success of 2023’s toy-based Barbie film, which became a global phenomenon. Under CEO Chris Cocks, a gaming-focused leader, Hasbro plans to shift its resources toward interactive entertainment, including a potential push into video game development. However, this pivot likely means fans won’t see sequels to movies like Honor Among Thieves, despite its creative take on classic D&D themes.

Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth can now access The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying sourcebook on D&D Beyond. Created by Swedish publisher Free League, this adaptation tailors the award-winning One Ring RPG for Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition ruleset. The 240-page guide features six classes, 12 subclasses, 14 species, and 42 unique feats designed to capture the essence of Tolkien’s world. It also includes adventure paths for levels 1–10, complemented by compatible maps for D&D Beyond’s virtual tabletop. While the physical book costs over $50 on Free League’s website, the D&D Beyond edition is available for $29.99, offering players a seamless way to explore Middle-earth using modern tools.

Wizards of the Coast’s Archetype Entertainment has announced Exodus: The Traveler’s Handbook, a tabletop RPG tied to its upcoming sci-fi video game Exodus. Created by James Ohlen, a veteran designer of classics like Baldur’s Gate and Knights of the Old Republic, this TTRPG invites players to lead “Travelers” on perilous missions involving alien artifacts and time-dilation consequences. The tabletop game is offered as a limited pre-order for “founders” who subscribe to the game’s email list before December 10. While details about gameplay mechanics remain scarce, speculation suggests a possible adaptation of D&D’s 5E rules. Both the game and TTRPG aim to expand the Exodus universe, blending space exploration with rich storytelling.

Sony is reportedly in talks to acquire Kadokawa, a Japanese media conglomerate with interests in publishing, anime, gaming, and more. If successful, this deal could have far-reaching implications, particularly in the tabletop gaming and anime industries. Kadokawa owns FromSoftware, the acclaimed studio behind Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Bloodborne, but its portfolio extends far beyond gaming. Kadokawa also publishes light novels, manga, and anime, with ties to international distributors. The deal might provide Kadokawa’s tabletop sector—bolstered by its recent acquisition of Arclight, a prominent Japanese tabletop company—with stronger global opportunities. Sony’s potential purchase of Kadokawa has sparked concerns about a monopoly in the anime industry.

Thomas Elliott, a former Games Workshop artist known for his work on Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar, is developing Eskaton, an original grimdark science fiction setting. After five years at Games Workshop, Elliott transitioned to freelance work in 2023 to focus on this passion project, a decade in the making. Eskaton explores a universe where space travel is fragmented, technology has stagnated, and human colonies evolve in isolation. The setting’s rich narrative includes dystopian worlds, such as Neo-plasia, where massive mining facilities and totalitarian regimes dominate.Key elements of Eskaton include the Agori—towering cyborg warriors—and a dark, expansive sandbox for storytelling. Elliott plans to release Eskaton as a series of art books and miniatures, starting with Neo-plasia, while collaborating on a skirmish game. Inspired by the success of indie wargames like Trench Crusade, Elliott hopes Eskaton will offer a fresh take on grimdark aesthetics, providing an alternative to well-worn franchises.

Household Volume II expands the imaginative universe of the ENNIE-nominated RPG, delving deeper into the lore, settings, and characters of the Littlings’ adventures. Players explore new areas, including the Garden’s Front Yard and Backyard, filled with mythical locations like the Fountain of Quillwaters and Bramble Town. New playable Folk, including Gnomes, Shinigami, and Fae, join the existing roster alongside new animal companions like moths and frogs. The book introduces fresh mechanics tied to seasonal changes, colossal opponents, and a new Profession, the Wayfarer, which brings unique vocations like Traveling Artist and Settler. The expansion also enhances gameplay with new Vocations for all existing Professions and a rich narrative set in an expansive, beautifully detailed world. Household Volume II’s expansive offerings include beautifully illustrated maps and art by renowned creators, enriching the immersive experience. Comprehensive pledge tiers provide various combinations of physical and digital rewards, from corebooks to custom dice sets. With its focus on artistic and production quality, Two Little Mice promises a rich RPG experience, slated for delivery by December 2025, showcasing their dedication to world-building and storytelling.

Elf Creek Games, a board game publisher known for titles like Atlantis Rising and Honey Buzz, faces backlash from Kickstarter backers due to prolonged delays in delivering crowdfunded projects and a lack of updates since August 30, 2024. The company has four overdue campaigns, including expansions for existing games and a new title, Paradox Initiative. Some backers, particularly in North America and Europe, have received partial deliveries, but others, including international supporters, are still waiting years past original timelines. Notably, the designer of Honey Buzz left the company in October but has tried to provide independent updates. Communication from Elf Creek Games’ founder, Brent Dickman, remains absent, leaving backers frustrated and concerned about the fate of their pledges.

As we wait for season 8, we discuss who should rule Westeros after the defeat of the White Walkers (going out on a limb there). Will it be the Mother of Dragons? Will Jon Snow unbend the knee? Is there a dark horse contender? Will Dorne – nope, that’s not happening. We both predict who it will be and make a case for our preferences.

We also discuss whether HBO’s treatment of one contender in season 7 is either genius or terrible, and we warn about the dangers of chimpanzees.

You laugh at them at the circus. You welcome them into your homes to entertain your children. You let them sell you hamburgers. But who are the men and women who hide behind the makeup. In this Creature Feature, we showcase clowning through history, and we discuss how you can play them as antagonists and protagonists in your role-playing games. And before you ask, “sexy clown” did not make the cut.

For a longer discussion on clowns listen to our podcast here.

We review the new(ish) tabletop RPG Tales from the Loop that has many people excited. Tales from the Loop seems to have hit a sweet spot with its combination of ’80s nostalgia, interesting game mechanics, and a setting both fantastic and familiar (well, if you’re from Sweden or Neveda).

Do we think it should find its way to your gaming table? Does our love affair with Modiphius continue? Is there a Swedish word for “Goonies”? Find out in our video review as we discuss “roleplaying in the ’80s that never was”.

Still on the fence about getting into the latest edition of Warhammer 40K? Well, you’re in luck. We unbox Dark Imperium, the “ultimate” Warhammer 40,000 8th edition starter set. We also discuss the value of the set, the quality of the miniatures, and how to best approach getting into 40k if you are new to the hobby.
